A team of AV technicians turned Edinburgh Castle into a giant 3D canvas in one of the largest projection mapping projects ever staged in the UK. Standard Life Opening Event: Deep Time – the launch event for the Edinburgh International Festival – was created with support from AV specialists Blue-i and McLcreate.

An audience of 27,000 watched the animation, which was created by 59 Productions and accompanied by a soundtrack by the Scottish rock band Mogwai. The show celebrated 350 million years of Edinburgh’s history. The name was derived from the concept of geological time developed by 18th century geologist, James Hutton.

After 160 hours of pre-programming, the audio-visual crew arrived on site a week before the show to rig 42 Panasonic PT-DZ21K projectors, delivering 840,000 lumens of light output, and four 4X4 D3 Pro media servers. The projectors were rigged in stacks of three on top of one of the buildings opposite the castle and all the equipment had to be craned up to the rooftops.

Ed Cooper of Blue-i’s theatre arm, Blue-i Theatre Technology, said: “This was a once in a lifetime spectacle and we’re proud to have played a part in making it happen. Working in partnership with 59 Productions and McLcreate has been a fantastic experience from start to finish. This was a challenging project and we couldn’t have asked for more help and support from the festival team.”Deep Time 1
