LCI Productions presented Daleks, the Tardis, and projections in honour of Doctor Who Day and the 60th anniversary of the renowned sci-fi series. In collaboration with BBC Wales, the company is orchestrating a nighttime water-based projection spanning four days at the Roath Basin in Cardiff Bay.

Doctor Who is the longest-running sci-fi TV show, first airing on BBC television on November 23rd 1963. The five-minute show is premiering tonight (23rd November), with an official switch-on hosted by Steffan Powell, presenter of Doctor Who: Unleashed. The show will then run every 30 minutes from 5.30 pm until 9.30 pm until Sunday 26th November.

With a narrative created by former Doctor Who script editor Gary Russell, the content was produced by the BBC with LCI productions giving guidance on how to optimise the content for use on the water screen to get the best for the show. The content is projected onto a 30m water screen that has been installed in the lake, with two Panasonic projectors delivering the visuals and content running from a Madmapper media server.

The audio-visual spectacle features highlights from the last 60 years of IP, including The Doctor, companions and foes of the Time Lord, plus an exclusive shot featuring the upcoming fifteenth Doctor Ncuti Gatwa.

Rob Paul, design director from LCI Productions says:

“A water show in Cardiff Bay is the perfect way to celebrate 60 years of this iconic sci-fi series. All the characters that people know and love are projected larger than life as 3D holograms floating in the middle of the lake. The show is sure to both surprise and enchant audiences of all ages, with the accompanying audio score fully immersing guests in the experience.”
